When to Adjust Your Plan

Frequently asked questions

Why does the post count formula add one extra post at the end?

Every fence run requires a starting post and then a sequence of intermediate posts for each section. If you simply divide the total length by your spacing, you are calculating the number of sections rather than the uprights. Adding one accounts for the final terminal post that closes out the end of the run.

How deep should I actually dig my post holes?

A reliable structural rule is to bury one-third of your total post length underground, with an absolute minimum depth of two feet. If you live in a region with severe winters, your holes must also extend below your local frost line to prevent seasonal heaving from pushing the posts upward.

Why does nominal lumber size differ from actual board size?

Lumber is sold by its rough-cut dimensions before drying and planing at the mill. A nominal 4x4 post actually measures three and a half inches square, while a 1x6 picket is five and a half inches wide. Using actual measurements in your calculations prevents gaps and structural misalignment.

How many bags of concrete do I need for each hole?

Should I leave a gap between pickets on a privacy fence?
