Understanding Board Feet and Lumber Volume

When you buy hardwood for furniture making or fine woodworking, you do not purchase it by the linear foot or standard piece. Instead, lumber yards use a standardized volumetric unit known as the board foot. One board foot represents a volume of wood equivalent to a piece one foot long, one foot wide, and one inch thick. This works out to 144 cubic inches of material. When you use a board feet calculator, it multiplies the thickness in inches, width in inches, and length in feet, then divides the entire product by 144 to yield the total volume.

The most common mistake woodworkers make is treating nominal dimensions as actual dimensions when performing manual calculations. Pricing Hardwood versus Softwood

To find the total cost of your project, you multiply the final volumetric result by the current board foot price quoted by your local mill or distributor. Because hardwood boards come in random widths and random lengths, no two boards have the exact same surface area, making a reliable mathematical tool essential for accurate budgeting.
